The Hippies destroyed us last night, but we drank a lot and got cupcakes so it wasn't all bad.
The real sad part was that John, Amber and I had to work our way through two bottles of champagne which I had chilling in my car in hopes of spraying it all over my teammates should we have won.
Next time for sure.
The problem is that in order to beat the Hippies we have to train like the Hippies. That means about another ten years of playing 2 nights a week with a couple practices thrown in and tournaments once a month. Of course, they'll be doing it too so we'll always be 10 years behind...until they die. So let's just try to outlast them.
Great season, kids. See you next year.

Dragons Asleep at the Plate...
Well, we lost a tough one on Tuesday night to one of our arch rivals the Luck Dragons by a score of 5-4. It was all tied up going into the bottom of the 7th when Brian "Happy Feet" Brokaw got up and hit a home run. Had the LDs not lulled our left fielder to sleep, it surely would have been a caught ball, but instead it kissed off the top of the Chris' glove and the rest is history. Oh well, the game didn't really matter either way for us as it is coming down to next week for the championship.
Speaking of next week, it looks like Jess and I are going to miss the big game. I wish you guys the best against the Hippies and hope that you guys can manage a victory and some fleeces for our team. There is a slim chance we will make the game, but I won't know until Tuesday at about 7 p.m. so don't count on it.

Smack Down...
Not really in the mood to do much blogging today. The Suck Dragons whooped the living piss out of Suckralicious last night 16-3. Those of you in our path, beware because our offense was fucking lethal last night.
Next week we play one of our two arch rivals, the Luck Dragons at 630. See you then.

Lady Suck Dragon Screws Up Team Cheer
There was another incident last night that was perhaps even more upsetting than the Hippies implosion.
Game ball winner, Slamber Browne, totally screwed up the Suck Dragons' post-game cheer.
"Luck!" she incorrectly yelled as the team had their hands joined.
"Uhhhhhh" responded much of the team before Browne continued to spell out the wrong team name "L-U-C...."
The cheer was halted.
After a few failed attempts to explain the error to her, Browne caught on and apologized repeatedly before hopping back on the horse that threw her by yelling "Suck!"
"Dragons!"
"S-U-C-K!"
"In a good way!"
It was a sad embarrassment, but a great recovery.
Rumor has it that, an hour later, one of the Hippies showed up with a laptop to prove that Browne's orignal cheer was correct. Of course, everybody else had already forgotten about the game and moved on with their lives (i.e. playing Wii Fit). Turned out he was wrong anyhow.

Let sleeping [dragons] lie...
Last night, in what was supposed to be our last match-up of the year against the Damn Dirty Hippies, the Suck Dragons won by a score of 7-5. This was by far the sweetest victory since the inception of the team. Last week, after the Chupa Cabras failed to show, I wrote the following paragraph:
"I would like to say that a "win is a win," but I don't want to conjure up any ideas that I think it's okay to take walks at the end of a game or run time off the clock by walking out to the outfield in order to ensure that you get that win."
If I were to say that what was written above was not directed at last night's opponent, I would be lying worse than Rafael Palmeiro during his grand jury testimony. However, to no one's surprise, that is exactly how the Hippies played last night. They played like the game was taking place during 4th grade recess. I think because so many of them are teachers, the students may be starting to rub off on them.
You see, the Hippies took a 4-2 lead in the second inning and kicked it into low-gear, walking (read: old chinese women walk faster) out to the field, taking time off the clock, having conversations with each other, all in the hopes of holding on to their lead a little bit longer. Well guess what, it didn't work out that way and an inning or two later, the game was tied. So, what do the Hippies do next? They crowd the plate and super glue their bats to their shoulders for two straight innings? Of course this did not work either because Chris threw strikes and let's just say our defense was not giving up much last night. In the final inning, the game was tied and the Dragons had the bases juiced with one out and in true sportsman-like fashion, the Hippies resort to bitching at the umpire for five minutes about some phantom play that no one saw except for two Hippies. The Hippies pitcher was so irate that he could not throw a strike to save his life so yours truly, who is up with the bases loaded and one out and could probably swing at anything remotely close and drive in the winning run, takes the sweetest walk of his life (not too mention the only walk I have ever taken in co-ed softball in 15-plus seasons of playing). Yes, I know that what I did was the direct opposite of my quote above, but fuck it, they deserved it. Anyway, the Hippies pitcher starts fighting with the up and yelling in his face, calling for a protest and all this crap, all while the Dragons are jumping for joy and holding their well-deserved fingers in the air signaling that they are now number 1!
Our team played great last night and everyone played a role. We stuck together and pulled out the second biggest win of our careers as Dragons. We are really starting to gel and our defense is really becoming solid. Now, all we gotta do is beat the Luck Dragons and we can put it in cruise control.
To the Hippies, I love you guys, but I think somewhere along the line last night you guys forgot that it's COED D-LEAGUE SOFTBALL and that, for the most part, the teams in this league are friends! Yeah, I know, "Pot...meet Kettle." But seriously, you guys kinda reminded us of this "Mets Guy" you're always talking about last night. Anyway, see you guys in a few week's for what is commonly known in sports as "The Rubber Match."
Update: I just saw this on Brokaw's Blog:
"And of course, the cameo by the Hippie who returned to the field an hour after his team's loss, laptop in hand, to argue with the ump about a play that happened earlier in the night. I'm all for the Rule of Law, but when we only have 13 minutes to play and we're losing, please save it for the post-game next time!"
Are you kidding me!? Whoever that was should be kicked off of your team.

Chupa Blah-blahs...
Did not show up for the second time in as many weeks and the Suck Dragons pulled off their third victory in a row. I would like to say that a "win is a win," but I don't want to conjure up any ideas that I think it's okay to take walks at the end of a game or run time off the clock by walking out to the outfield in order to ensure that you get that win.
I hear that the Chupa Cabras have been given the boot from the league which means we now have four teams in our league (that is sad).

Don't Call It A Comeback...
Just call it a victory. The Suck Dragons never doubted themselves and pulled out an 11-8 victory over Suckralicious improving their record to 2-1 on the season.
The SDs got off to an extremely slow start last night, with their first run finally coming in the third inning. Our early inning defense was nothing to write home about either handing over 4 runs in the first inning . Eventually though, we settled in (read: had more beers) and started putting some runs on the board and for the most part, shut down the attack of our foes. We were down 5-8 heading into the top of half of the last inning and managed to hit 'em with a six run pounding of an inning that put us in a comfortable lead. We then had to hold them off which we did by going four up three down in the bottom half of the sixth. The rest is history. Point is, we really only played like our normal selves for about half the game and managed to score 11 runs.
Last night's game marked the first time the SDs have ever battled back to win a game and we did it in grand fashion.
Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into next week's game against league newcomers the Chupacabras.

Sweet Relief...
We done it! We finally beat our arch rivals the Luck Dragons and we did it in grand fashion. The score read 10-5, but it wasn't really that close. Heck, they even got one extra at-bat than we did.
Point is we overcame a major hurdle in our quest to become the champs of the Tahoe Park Tuesday night league. Shit, if we'd beaten the Hippies two weeks ago, we'd be sitting at the top of the food chain all by ourselves.
I am feeling a little lazy today (probably the beers) and have a lot of work to do so I am just going to say that everyone played a great game.
Look for a few more tweaks to the defense next week as we prepare to face another formidable opponent.

Coach Nick's Take on Game #1
Ouch!
We almost had'm, Sucks. It was a heartbreaking last-inning loss, but I've never been so proud of a group of losers. The city's scoreboard may have read 7-6 Hippies, but the scoreboard in my heart read 37-2 us. Here's why:
The Hippies firstbasewoman, Shaun, uses a real and actual firstbasewoman's glove. Clearly, the Hippies have too much gear. Our firstbasewoman uses a 1983 George Brett model. Our only spare is a 1990 Chris Sabo. How many balls got by Amber? A big ol' zero.
Score that: +5 Suck Dragons, -2 Hippies
At game time, I thought we were going to win by forfeit because the Hippies failed to show up. Turned out they were simply at the other field finishing off another pre-game practice. This was approximately the same time we were cracking open beer #3.
Score that: +3 (beers) Suck Dragons, -2 Hippies
The Hippies had more new players whom they clearly met at tournaments. More people with "athletic equipment." Their team brought batbags, our team brought cigarettes.
Score that: +5 Suck Dragons, -2 Hippies
They scored more runs than us.
Score that: 6 Suck Dragons, +7 Hippies
But only like one more run.
Score that: +5 Suck Dragons, -1 Hippies
We had Chris making 80% of our plays.
Score that: +10 Suck Dragons, 0 Hippies
They want me to play with them Wednesday nights in Elk Grove.
Score that: 0 Suck Dragons, +5 Hippies
I had to refuse because I can't be associated with a team with such an out of whack beer-to-practices held ratio.
Score that: +3 Suck Dragons, -5 Hippies
They're not the Luck Dragons.
Score that: 0 Suck Dragons, +2 Hippies
Total score: Suck Dragons- 37 Hippies- 2

.500!

We pulled out our second win of the season against the Bureau last night by a final score of 9-3 and managed to finish the season at .500 with a record of 4-4. Not exactly a winning season, but if there is something to take away from the season it's that we finished it by going 3-1. Once our team started to gel, we started winning and hopefully we'll carry that into next season.
Our defense played great last night when it needed to and kudos to those of you playing a position you usually don't play (Tiffi and Lisa). Also, I thought Chris was amazing as usual in left and Luke played a solid right field. (Ed also played right field, but he played it more like a hockey goalie. He also pointed out last night that he did not own a baseball mit until 2000.)
The offense was pretty good too. We scored a decent amount of runs, but left a few people on base so whatever.
Some highlights from last night's game:
- Lisa Nottingham playing a solid second base and winning MVP. (She also scored from first.)
- Chris B doing amazing in left. He is quick like Cheetah out there.
- Yours truly coming up a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
- Jessica looking a bit like Angelina Jolie when she got home last night because she hung tough and took a bad hop in the kisser.
- John telling me that he couldn't turn a double play because he was too tired from "chasing [my] ass around the bases."
- Nick playing one inning in the field in a 6 inning game and not complaining once.
- Tiny Amber making a routine play at first and then saying she thinks she pulled a muscle.
- Tiff Mendes stepping up and playing and coaching third last night (gotta work on the hold up signal for next game).
- Luke almost face planting on home plate due to the "quick sand" in the batter's box.
- KC still trying to figure out just the right amount of beers to bring.
- Ed telling the opposing team he was going opposite field this time and then popping up to roughly the same spot he had the previous at-bat.
- Megan texting me that she felt ill 20 minutes before the game, but somehow managing to get a couple hits, field a few grounders, and drink a few beers. If that's ill, I hope it's contagious.
I don't think I missed anyone at the game last night. If I did, my bad.
New season starts next Tuesday at 730 versus the Hippies. Schedule and shit is posted on the Blog.

VICTORY!!!!

That's right ladies and gentlemen, the Suck Dragons beat the league champion Damn Dirty Hippies last night by a final score of 3-2. The Dragons defense killed it last night shutting down the Hippies each time they got something going.
(Did I mention the Hippies won the league and haven't lost all season? I shouldn't be too excited because, after all, this is the second time we've beat them. In case your counting, that's two more times than the next team in our league.)
After the game I heard rumblings from Suckralicious saying that the Hippies, "let us win." To that I say horseshit! That chick they had playing for them last night (the one with the blonde mullet), played shortstop like fucking Derek Jeter and swung the bat better than Cory. They also brought in some Samoan dude who was easily four times bigger than their normal outfielder Dave. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Paco pretty much umpired the game last night for anyone that was paying attention. Those three things lead me to believe that there was no way the Hippies tried to throw that game.
Our victory can be attributed to two things: our defense played out of its mind, and it takes your average Hippie 13.5 minutes to round the bases. Hippies, you might want to tone it down a bit and focus on one league because you guys played like the two people in the above picture look - old and tired.
Megan got a well-deserved game ball for doing an incredible job at Rover and everyone else played great. I hope that we never see those umps again because between the horseshit calls, the interference in the field, and the band-aid incident, I don't think I can take another game with those guys.
Next week we play the Bureau whom we demolished last time we met. However, something tells me we won't be seeing the same watered-down version we got last time so we'll just have to play out our minds again.
I think we should do a hot dog BBQ before or after the game next week. Details on that to come.

Fucking Lame...
Apparently, the dude that oversees our league is a big fat Nancy-boy because every other league I know of played last night. Now, a season that should have ended for the Suck Dragons this week, will carry on almost until next month. What is a little smoke in the lungs? It is softball. It's not like were running wind sprints for an hour.

My Head Almost Exploded...
And I lived to tell about it. Last night, the Suck Dragons secured their second win of the season by beating Sacralicious 12-8. It was one hell of a game even though I almost punched everyone on the team in the face.
We jumped out to an early lead and never really looked back. We did glance in our rear view mirror a couple of times in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but never actually put the arm on the passenger's seat, put the car in reverse, and rotated the old noggin.
Our defense was superb for five innings. I mean we were fucking amazing out there. We held them to two runs until the sixth inning. Everyone played a role in last night's defensive iron curtain so I really don't see the need to point out highlights...shit, who am I kidding.
Defensive highlights from last nights game:
Chris B. throwing fuckers out from left field at 50 percent of the bases. He looked like a short stop out there. (Oh wait, that is his other position).
Megan R/B. playing a great second base, catching "oh shit" frozen ropes and fielding a couple of tough ground balls up the middle.
Jamison H. retiring the entire side at third one inning.
Amber B. who was very close to retiring the side one inning, even with the stupid red hat on.
Yours truly for throwing strikes the last inning when they went up with intention of walking.
There were others, but they were not highlight worthy this go round. There's always next week.
If you didn't catch the score above, the S. Dragons also managed to put 12 runs on the board. That is one shy of our personal best. I am under the impression that pretty much everyone on the team scored and if someone didn't, I don't remember so who cares. That is the mark of a quality offense - when you're not really sure how you got it done, you just know you did.
Next week we play the Bureau. Oh and must have failed to mention that we are currently in 3rd Place!
Hot dogs and burgers at our house before or after the game next week. Have a great 4th of July.

Enchiladas and a little bit of Luck.

The loss from last night's game is still stinging, literally. My leg is killing me from sliding into third. (No, I did not have to take a juicy turd.)
Overall, I thought it was a really good game. The damn Luck Dragons beat us 7-4. They managed to score one run an inning or something like that and needle their way to victory. We were, however, worthy competitors this time around and they should fear us next season when the Suck Dragons are a well oiled machine. We just couldn't manage to keep the ball away from Brokaw and Rob who are like a couple of spider monkeys with mits hopped up on Jolt Cola when they play the field.
In an ode to Brokaw, I thought I would do the post-game highlights as he sometimes does.
The Jose Uribe "I Should Have Worn My Flip-down Sunglasses" Award goes to Nick Leonte who looked like a blind man feeling his way around a fun house during a line drive in the first inning. (He made the catch.)
The Nomar Garciaparra "I Think I'll Just Sit This One Out" Award goes to Jamison Harnish for missing the game. She may have been the difference between a win and a loss last night.
The Manny Ramirez "I Surprised Myself By Making That Catch" Award goes to Chris Baquial who made some great catches in left last night that I really didn't think he was going to get.
The Oakland A's "We Score Runs But No One Really Remembers How" Award goes to our offense last night. I cannot for the life of me remember how one of our runs was scored and it's not because of the margaritas.
The Mike Piazza "I Moved To First Base And Am Not Really Sure What I Am Doing Yet" Award goes to Megan Robinson for stepping up and playing third last night and doing a decent job.
The John Olerude "I Have To Wear This Stupid Helmet" Award goes to Tiffani Mendez who had to wear the new motivational speaker on our team, Billy, two times last night. (Although the game ended on the second one.)
That's all I got for this week. Next week we take on those Damn Dirty Hippies so expect some sort of pre/post game affair.
Kudos to a job somewhat well done last night.

THE BUREAU OF SUCK...

First off, Luke has informed me that his sprained taint is recovering nicely.
Last night, the Suck Dragons posted their first win of the season in very convincing fashion. We mopped up a once formidable opponent 13-0 only letting them on base about six times the whole game. Man, it sure felt good to win one.
Our defense stole the show last night, completely shutting down the Bureau. Shit, they only made it to third base once the entire game and that only lasted for about two seconds because the girl tried to score and was nailed at home on a great play that begin with Luke actually hitting the cut-off man and ended with Chris B. making a great throw to home for the out.
I would say our 13 runs was a combination of our hitting and the Bureau's god awful fielding. As Fatty wrote on my Myspace page, "the other team has the worst third baseman in history." That statement is not far off.
I am going to skip the highlights this week because I think the entire game was one big highlight. Everything really came together last night. It's too bad we are heading into a bye week and can't carry this momentum forward.
In two week's we play our arch rivals (in name only) the Luck Dragons. I think we are going to try and squeeze a practice in between now and then just to take some more BP and infield. Date and time to follow.

Oh The Humanity!
We were this close to winning our first game of the season last night (note to reader: I am holding my index finger and my thumb about half an inch apart). We had that team and we let it slip away. Losses like that hurt much worse than your run of the mill ass whooping (see week one score at right). As a result, we dropped to 0-3 on the season as we approach the half-way point.
Overall, I would say it was an improvement compared to weeks past and our offense is showing some serious signs of life as we managed to put a ten spot on the board. Our defense still needs some work, but will improve as folks start to get used to their new positions. I am thinking that perhaps Coach Nick and I should maybe set up a practice in the coming weeks.
Some things to take away from last night's game:
We now have a lefty in the lineup who can hit home runs and I am not talking about Ed. :)
Ed's bat did come alive though, he just didn't make it all the way around the bases (came pretty close).
Perhaps KC was right by saying he shouldn't drink before the games because his bat was on fire last night.
Chris and John did a nice job at shortstop.
Coach Nick was like Mike Timlin in middle relief.
Sonya made some nice plays in the Rover spot, including a great snag of a line drive.
Tiffani finally settled in at second and once that happened, she seemed to stop everything that came her way.
Jessica made a nice attempt on a hard throw from Luke, catching the ball on one hop and then diving to try and put a tag on the runner.
However, my favorite moment of the night would have to be Chris somehow catching a ball at second that Megan literally threw straight up in the air from about a foot away and making the out.
Good effort last night. I am sure most of you are getting tired of this losing thing so let's get a win this coming week. We can beat the Bureau. Shit, I think we can beat anybody in the league. We just need to settle down and make the easy plays and the next thing you know, we are finishing 5-0.

Hippified!
Man, if we could only take back that first inning it would have been a great game.
The Suck Dragons dropped to 0-2 last night losing a close one to the reigning league champions. I believe the final was 11-6. We looked much better than we did the week before and are starting to gel as a team.
Some highlights from the game:
- Amber playing an amazing first base as usual and saving our collective asses several times in the field, thus winning the "game ball."
- Chris B. throwing one of the slower hippies out at first from right field.
- Chris N. making some nice catches in the outfield in relief duty.
- Coach Nick making a great catch on the move. I didn't know he could move that fast.
- Yours truly going yard for the third time in as many games.
- The fact that we managed to score two runs in the first inning when no one hit it out of the infield.
- Tiff Mendes crushing a ball to left that was eventually caught. (Where did that come from?)
- Jessica throwing lasers back to me while playing catcher. A first on this team, or any team I have played on for that matter.
- Coach Nick for juggling all of our players last night. Who would of thought we would have everyone show up to the first two games?
Anyway, a lot of highlights and there were several more that I have not mentioned, but know that they have not gone unnoticed by yours truly.
The Hippies plan on practicing Saturday morning in the Park for anyone who's interested. Game balls will return next week! Promise.

We Are Official...
Today, at approximately 2 p.m., UPS delivered the Suck Dragons new uniforms and they look pretty damn good if I do say so myself.
This means that we will have uniforms for next Tuesday's game against the Damn Dirty Hippies, who also have new uniforms. Ours have a picture of a dragon on them, theirs have pictures of their kids...same thing really.
Anyway, I will bring the jerseys to the game and hand them out. Please bring your $17 to the game. Cash is preferred, but I'll take checks.
Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!

Rocky Start
The Suck Dragons played the Luck Dragons last night and got shelled 16-6. I am going to go ahead and chalk that one up to "it's a new team and this is the first time we all played together."
The game seemed closer then what the final score reflects, but maybe it's because 6 of their runs came during their last at bat and we went 1-2-3 our last at bat.
Some positives from the game:
- Our new players seem to have met our expectations (by ours I mean the coaches). We found some new women who can play infield and that is always a good thing.
- The outfield played amazing last night and I am not just saying that because I was a part of it. The outfield didn't drop anything and I am 99.9% sure that nothing made it past us. Megan made an amazing play and threw someone out at first from shallow right/deep second. Nice job sis!
- Our offense had a decent showing. 6 runs isn't bad, it just wasn't enough to win. Somehow it felt like we had more than 6 so I think we need to check the scorekeep next game and place a beer can on the bat rack for every run we score.
As a bench coach and the writer of this blog, I refuse to be negative and instead will point out some things that I think we need to work on. I apologize if I yell things on the field. I am still adjusting to this whole having fun versus must win mentality (which was not the case in my old league).
Something that killed us this week was our inabilty to advance the runner. We would get someone on first and then the next person up would hit a grounder which would lead to an out at second and thus, we'd again have someone on stuck on first. I think this probably happened 10 times last night. I think we'll get better at this as the season goes on.
We have a tough match up this coming week against spring league champions the Damn Dirty Hippies (formerly Old Skool). We beat them last time we met, but I think the fact that we got them drunk before the game played a big role in our victory.
Also, I think beers need to be mandatory before each game. I am a shining example of the effects of alcohol on one's ability to hit a softball. For the greater part of last season, I couldn't hit my way out of a wet paper bag. The last two games, I have had a few beers prior to and during the game and I am batting .1000 with a coule of homers (not that anyone's keeping track). The power of the booze.
Megan and Chris have volunteered to have the pregame next week. Their house backs up to the field on 9th and David (depending on which way you're coming from). The house is on the bend of the street and has ivy covering the front of the house.

Welcome!
So, this will be the home for all things Suck Dragons during the softball season. It will probably not be nearly as good as the Solid Gold Hits blog currently operated by Coach Nick, but it's a start.
To be honest, I have no idea what I am doing. I am probably the most computerly-challenged person on the planet for someone who sits in front of a computer all day.
Anyway, check back later for updates and things. Might even have some pictures up by then.
